The prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel is a prayer of tradition Christian Cattolica.
The 13 October 1884 Pope Leo XIII He had a vision – at the end of the mass at the Vatican – in which the evil one was threatening the Church: soon after he had composed the prayer (in extended form), recommending it was recited at the end of each mass, In addition to place it in the collection for exorcism.

Prayer continued to be recited until 26.9 64, When, with the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council, l ’ education “Inter oecumenici” # 48, § j, decreed: “…The Leonine prayers are suppressed”.
Pope Leo XIII is author of De exorcismis et supplicationibus quibusdam, collection of exorcisms, among them is part l’ Exorcismus in Malignos et Angelos Apostaticos, one of the most powerful: in the first part, the Pope entered the prayer to Saint Michael, invoked as “Most glorious Prince of the heavenly armies”, as “guardian and patron of the Holy Church”.
The book was confirmed with major revisions in the Second Vatican Council.
After reviewing reconcile this fundamental text, exorcisms are recited in specific cases with permission from the Bishop, including the prayer to St. Michael, drastically shortened and now suggested as exception form and for minor exorcisms, where the short previous tradition considered it most effective exorcism in the wider ’ l series of possession.
So we have three versions:
- original extended Exorcismus in Malignos et Angelos Apostaticos by Leo XIII,
- short form in the Leonine Prayers (Roman ritual 1884) by Leo XIII,
- exorcism after Vatican II.
